Hi, I'm really hoping for clarification on this. We have no known sensitivities to EMFs.We've been avoiding home installation of wireless, but what we've come up with is getting a wireless router to plug in only when we need it, say to buy books for the Nook then turn it off when reading the books on the nook, or for brief periods when writing with a laptop outside and need to do quick internet research. Since we are just using the router to obtain wireless for brief periods as such and then unplugging it, does this seem relatively safe? All thoughts greatly appreciated.
I'm going to let someone else answer this who knows more about wireless when it's turned off.
But why not just use a regular wired modem?
That's what I do.

We've struggle with this issue personally and in the healthy homes we build. All of our homes are thoroughly wired for plug-in internet connections so folks have access in all rooms and don't have to go with wireless.
Unfortunately Nooks, Kindles and a lot of tablet computers only work with wireless.
In my existing house I finally broke down and installed a wireless router that I just plug in when I want to download a book for my kindle.
In a house we're currently working on we plan on installing wireless for our clients with a simple wall switch to turn on when they want. It's still has wired connections everywhere.
One thing that I have noticed is dual band wireless routers seem to impact my physiology more when both bands are turned on. If we just turn on the 2.4 GHz transmitter it seems to have less impact than when both or just the 5 GHz are on. My recommendation
is to save your money and buy the less expensive single band 2.4 GHz router unless there is a real need for speed.
The other issue that came up in a condo remodel we recently did want our clients didn't need to install wireless - there were 8 wireless routers they could pickup and 5 of them had no security settings enabled. There's no escape in a high density environment.
Great recommendation, Debra. Just use a wired modem - that's what I do. However, I am still exposed to my neighbor's wireless, but it is weaker than if it was in my own home. I also changed my home phone from wireless to the old fashioned corded. My
cell phone is only on when I am away from home. There are studies that the wireless frequencies and electro magentic fields do alter your blood, and your health.... for the worse. (Stephen Sinatra MD) Earthing will help protect you - you can put your feet
on an earthing pad while working at your computer and also sleep on an earthing sheet at night. Works wonders for improving our health!
To answer Cheryl's question.....you CAN turn the wireless off and it is safe then. But I would still recommend wired and then you won't have to rush when on-line or worry about forgetting to turn it off.
I wanted the wireless router to buy books for the Nook then turn it off when reading the books on the nook, or for brief periods when writing with a laptop outside and need to do quick internet research because I am an outside person and like to write and
do as much as i can in fresh air. Again, I'd welcome any thoughts.
I also just bought a laptop w/the right weight, size and antiglare that I wanted (for outside) only to find that the LED lit keyboard and display I thought would be helpful features actually emit more EMFs! I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep this
laptop that meets all my other needs or start all over again searching for a tablet and then buying an external keyboard and mouse to go with it insetad.
I'm not sure why a wired keyboard and mouse is safer if I'm still using the laptop itself that has the inegrated mouse and keyboard, but that seems to be recommended. Is it because my hands won't actually be touching the integrated keyboard but will be
on the wired ones instead? Hooking up a keyboard and mouse to a tablet instead of the laptop I just got with the mouse and Keyboard self contained kind of defeats the mobility purpose of the laptop for outside writing. So, do you think keeping my self contained
laptop would be safe enough. I'd only use it on battery power (which is supposed to be safer) for 2-4 hours a day (maybe less if necessary) ?
I'd love to keep my laptop, but don't want to risk my health. I would working on the laptop outside offer any benefits to counteract the negative effects of the EMFs etc? am not MCs just concerned about long term health effects.
Also, I'm wondering if using the laptop outside has any positive effects to counter the negative effects of EMFs etc? Thank you.
