Have you been drinking tap water, taking prescription drugs, or brushing your teeth? Have you been swimming in a pool, sitting in a hot tub, eating supermarket vegetables, or eating commercial bread and other bakery products? Then chances are you've been exposed to flouride and bromide, and they are probably affecting the function of your thyroid gland.
It was known as far back as 1854 that fluoride inhibited the ability of the thyroid gland to concentrate iodine, a substance that is necessary for this gland to produce thyroid hormone. Excessive exposure to fluoride has also been linked to dental fluorosis (discoloration of the teeth), hip fractures, bone cancer, lowered intelligence, kidney toxicity and other problems. Bromide can also contribute to iodine definciency, and in addition cause many mental difficulties, including irritability, headaches, severe depression, dullness, apathy, difficulty concentrating, psychomotor retardation, delirium, schizophrenia, and hallucinations.
Both fluoride and bromide can accumulate in your body, particularly in the thyroid gland, where the molecules occupy the receptor sites meant for iodine.
Now iodine is not only an essential nutrient for the production of thyroid hormone, it also has many other beneficial effects in your body, including production of all the other hormones in your body. Adequate iodine levels are necessary for proper function of your immune system. Iodine is antibacterial, anticancer, antiparasitic, and antiviral--it's something good you want to have enough of in your body.
I read a very interesting book called Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It by Dr David Brownstein MD. In this book he gives a very specific detox for fluoride and bromide using iodine.
Here are Dr Brownstein's recommendations:
Water is necessary to help flush toxics out of the tissues of your body and carry them out of your body entirely through the kidneys. Dr Brownstein recommends taking your weight in pounds, divide it by 2 and then drink that number of ounces of water each day. Of course you should drink clean water that is not polluted with flouride, chlorine or any other chemicals. [See Debra's List: Water Filters for recommendations.]
Dr Brownstein says that Vitamin C can help stimulate the detoxification pathways of the body. He suggests taking 3-6,000mg of Vitamin C every day. Remember to take a wholefood vitamin C with all the co-factors, such as Natural Vitality Vitality C, which I take every morning.
According to Dr Brownstein, unrefined salt is the key to removing bromide from the body. He says, "I have found it impossible to lower bromine levels in my patients if they do not ingest unrefined salt." He recommends 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of unrefined salt per day. I use "The Original" Himalayan Crystal Salt whenever I use salt at home.
Large doses of iodine help the body release fluoride and bromide. Dr Brownstein recommends from 6-50mg per day. I've been taking 9 mg per day for a while. Dr Brownstein suggests Lugol's Iodine Solution, which includes both iodine and iodide.
I highly recommend recommend reading Dr Brownstein's book before embarking on this program. It is full of information on iodine and your thyroid gland as well as fluoride, bromide and other toxic halogens.
