Sustainable Seed Company

“Good food comes from good seed” is the first thing I saw when I went to this website and they definitely have good seed. “Since 2008, we’ve been offering heirloom seeds, garden seeds, and organic heirloom seeds – non-hybrid vegetable, flower, and herb seeds. We are America’s best source for heirloom vegetable seeds, heritage grains and herb seeds. We wanted to offer heirloom seeds for one reason: they’re not only our history, but our security. You can save the seeds of the vegetables, herbs and grains we offer, and with the proper methods, reliably get the same plants for generations to come. We’re also a CERTIFIED ORGANIC seed farm – setting us apart from many others who only resell seed. With over 1,800 varieties for you to choose from (over 700 of them bulk seed and 600 of them organic seeds), we’re also the web’s premiere source for backyard gardeners and farmers alike.” The only seed company powered with sustainable energy.

Floral Encounters

Certified organically grown seeds for specialty herbs and flowers, all grown and harvested on their own farm. They have a very long list of herb seeds, including seeds for harsh environments and seeds for deer resistant plants. Because they are a small farm, they sell their seed semi-cleaned. “This means that not all the plant material from around the seed is removed. Doing this is extremely time consuming and labor intensive and the main reason that seeds are as expensive as they are. So to keep the costs down we remove as much debris as possible but leave the more difficult pieces. So when you get your seeds, they won’t be pristine and just seeds; they will have other bits of plant material in with them.” I don’t mind that at all. Shows they are hand-harvested and not put through mechanical processing.

Sonic Bloom

I first put this in a book I wrote in 1990. What inspired me then and now is that the whole technology is based on the fact that the early morning singing of birds trigger plants to open their stomata–infinitesimal mouth-like pores that allow oxygen and water to pass out of the leaf while carbon dioxide and other gases move in to be transformed by photosynthesis into sugars. The music of nature, it seems, is vital to healthy plants. Sonic Bloom is an organic spray that is applied to the leaves of plants along with the specific sound frequency that induces stomata to open. The results are amazing.

Gardening by the Moon

"Gardening by the phases of the moon is a technique that can speed the germination of your seeds by working with the forces of nature. Plants respond to the same gravitational pull of tides that affect the oceans, which alternately stimulates root and leaf growth. This method has been practiced by many for hundreds of years, and is a perfect compliment to organic gardening…" Website sells an attractive gardening by the moon calendar and has more background information on why and how the moon affects the sprouting of seeds and the growth of plants.
