Trees, Food, and Removing Toxic Pollutants from the Air

Today my guest is Diann Dirks, an agricultural consultant living, working, writing, and researching in NE Georgia using the tools of Permaculture Design. Spring is the time to plant trees, so we’ll be talking about the relationships between trees and us, and give insight in when and how to plant them, and why.  Permaculture is a design science based on natural laws and a code of ethics: care for the earth, care for people, and returning surplus back to the earth and people. In that system, trees are of utmost importance because they stabilize all aspects of the environment. They create water systems which allow all other life forms to survive, manage the nutrients in the soil, connect all the friendly microbes to the soil and plants, feed birds and animals, return nutrition to the top soil, and a host of other benefits including detoxing the air, water, and soil. In Permaculture – which means permanent culture – true sustainability, the “Food Forest” is the anchor. Diann has created a food forest in her 93 bed garden creating a host of food and herb sources. She teaches classes in creating food forest, has an internship program passing on the knowledge and skills, and has as a large part of her mission the restoration of trees and forests for the future of mankind to sustain ourselves.

Amazing Home Air Purification Technology Removes 99.9% of All Types of Pollutants From Indoor Air

My guest today is Ryan Hamsho, Chief Operating Officer of Airstar Partners, LLC. He directs the sales of the O2 air purifier, a portable air purifier that removes pollutants from indoor air so effectively that the health of the user is improved. It uses a radically different technology than other home air filters. BioHygienics utilizes “miniaturized treatment plants” to destroy contaminants in the air , including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), odors, smoke particulates, gases, spores, viruses and bacteria, to create healthier indoor air quality (IAQ). We’re going to learn all about this new technology today. Ryan began his involvement in the air purification industry in 2009. He was initially approached as an investor in an air purification technology that has existed since 1979 and was being utilized in both industrial and medical settings, but had not yet entered the consumer market. After significant research on the technology, validated third party testing data, anecdotal evidence and market data analysis, he engaged himself with the company to develop the first BioHygienic portable air purifier called the O2. It was launched in 2010 with great success. Since the initial launch, Ryan has worked to strategically align the product with those who have the potential to greatly improve their quality of life in using the O2 air purifier. Many doctors and patients with respiratory problems are raving about this air purifier. www.o2airpurifier.com

How Smoke From Fireplaces, Wood Stoves, BBQs and More Contribute to Outdoor Air Pollution and Affect Our Health

Mary RozenbergMy guest today is Mary Rozenberg, Co-Founder of the Burning Issues website, a project of the nonprofit organization Clean Air Revival. We’ll be talking about particulate pollution in outdoor air, how you are contributing to it, and how it is affecting your own health and the health of others. Since 1987, Mary and members have been working tirelessly to improve ambient outdoor air quality through the reduction of Fine Particulate Pollution. The most common sources of deadly Fine Particulate Pollution are residential wood burning (RWB), restaurant wood burning, coal burning, forest fires and agriculture burning, and diesel and auto exhaust. It is estimated that 72,000 people die annually in the United States from the effects of these fine particles. Once emitted they are impossible to clean up. More than half of the fine particulate is caused by fewer than 10% of the population using the dirtiest fuels for recreation and heating. Their principal activity is public education, including the collection and dissemination of the latest science information regarding health effects, economic impacts, and individual actions to reduce and stop solid fuel combustion. Burning Issues also actively does particulate monitoring and has published the results. burningissues.org
