Health Care As If People Mattered

My guest Dr. Jeff Kane MD has practiced medicine in venues as varied as the National Institutes of Health and county hospital emergency departments. Fascinated by patients’ stories, he began, in the mid-1970s, to limit his work to facilitating support groups for people affected by cancer. He founded the support programs at Sutter Cancer Center in Sacramento and Sierra Nevada Cancer Center in Grass Valley, where he continues to facilitate groups and direct psychosocial education. Dr. Kane has published many articles on the healing relationship along with the books Be Sick Well (New Harbinger, 1991) and The Healing Companion (HarperSanFrancisco, 2001). His newest book, The Bedside Manifesto: Healing the Heart of Healthcare (CreateSpace, 2013), urges reform through revival of the venerable bedside manner. We’ll be talking about the need for human-based rather than highly technological medical care and how we can reform our medical system and personal experience.http://bedsidemanifesto.com.

How Natural Remedies Could Have Saved A Life

Pamela Seefeld,R.PhMy guest today is Pamela Seefeld, R.Ph, a registered pharmacist who prefers to dispense medicinal plants and other natural substances instead of prescription drugs. The week before Christmas, my brother died suddenly. The death certificate says the cause of death was pneumonia, but this was only the result of a lifetime of cigarettes, alcohol and prescription drugs (read more about my brother’s death at Life and Death: A Tale of Two Children.) We’ll talk about how prescription drugs can undermine your health in general, the side effects of the specific prescription drugs Bradley was taking at the time of his death, and what he could have done naturally instead of taking these prescription drugs. I can’t help but think my brother could be alive today if he had made better choices.
